๐ฟ About The Fresh Root
Fresh greens at home, no garden needed.
Our Mission
The Fresh Root exists to help everyday people grow fresh food at home โ without a garden, without a green thumb, and without a complicated setup.
Indoor hydroponics has become genuinely accessible in the last few years. You can get a countertop unit for under $50, grow fresh basil in 3 weeks, and harvest your own lettuce year-round regardless of where you live or what season it is.
But most of the information online is scattered, assumes prior knowledge, or is written for commercial growers. We write for beginners โ people who just want fresh herbs on the kitchen counter and aren't sure where to start.
What We Cover
The Fresh Root focuses on food crops for home growers:
- Herbs โ basil, mint, parsley, cilantro, chives, and more
- Leafy greens โ lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, bok choy
- Fruiting plants โ cherry tomatoes, peppers, strawberries (for the ambitious beginner)
- Root vegetables โ radishes, beets in deep systems
We cover system types (Kratky, DWC, NFT, AeroGarden), grow lights, nutrients, pH management, and troubleshooting. Everything anchored on practical guidance you can act on today.
Our Approach
We recommend products when they genuinely help. Some links on The Fresh Root are affiliate links โ if you buy through them, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's how we keep the site running and free to read.
We don't recommend anything we wouldn't use ourselves, and we're transparent about what's sponsored vs. independent. See our Affiliate Disclosure for full details.
About the Name
The Fresh Root is about the joy of eating something you grew yourself โ fresh off the vine, right in your kitchen. The "root" is literal (hydroponic roots!) and metaphorical: getting back to the basics of growing real food.
